Compact enough to fit into the corner of a pack, this tarp can be set up on hiking poles, slung from trees, or used as an awning. An it's an excellent companion to a bivy sack. The fabric uses silicone, so water beads and rolls off. When this extraordinary water repellency is combined with taut, steep rigging, the tarp acts like it’s waterproof, just as an umbrella made of fabric that is technically not waterproof provides excellent rain protection.
